The Naturalist’s Palette
Unavailable $ 144.00
The Naturalist's Palette is a collaboration born from a shared reverence for the quiet intelligence of the natural world. Created with artist and nature educator Richele Baburina of Ricochet Rabbit Studio, this collection is an invitation to slow down, observe closely, and paint what is often overlooked—the curve of a stem, the faded edge of a petal, the shimmer of an insect's wing.
Richele's work has long centered on the practice of nature journaling, where watercolor becomes a way of paying attention as much as a way of making art. Her thoughtful approach to color, shaped by seasons spent sketching outdoors, felt like a natural conversation with the pigments we create at Wildthorne. Together, we've assembled a palette that reflects both utility and wonder—a collection designed for artists who find joy in careful observation and the changing rhythms of the seasons.
Created as a companion to her Nature Journaling Together series, The Naturalist's Palette is equally at home tucked into a backpack for a morning walk or resting beside an open journal on the kitchen table. It is an invitation to notice a little more, paint a little slower, and carry the landscape with you wherever you wander.

From Richele:
Every color in this palette earned its place through field use. These are the paints I reach for most, distilled into a kit light enough to carry anywhere.
The structure is a gentle split primary—two yellows, two reds, one blue—that offers luminous mixes. Don't let the term intimidate you as it simply means more range with fewer paints. The rest of the palette is also pure intention—each color chosen to deepen what the primaries begin: a ready-made green, luminous shadows, transparent florals, grounding earths, and a little shimmer for the world's smallest wonders.
Mimosa & Goldenrod are bottled sunshine. Mimosa is a bright buttercup yellow that lifts highlights and sparks fresh spring greens. Goldenrod brings the warmth—honeyed and deep for autumn seedheads and maturing foliage.
Wild Strawberry & Abricot cover the reds—a pure berry-crimson for vibrant petals and clean purples, and a hushed warm apricot, subdued as late afternoon light, refined rather than bold.
Delphinium Blue was made for sky-blue wildflowers—Larkspur, Gentian, Forget-me-nots, Chicory—and stirs easily into a soft lilac.
Forkmoss is the green of deep moss and the shadowed heart of a leaf—reminiscent of ancient woodlands where one half expects to catch a glimpse of wood sprites and faeries. A green that warms, cools, and lightens without mixing from scratch every time.
Wood Violet is rich, deep, and floral. A thin glaze makes for natural, luminous shadows. A whisper of Wood Violet mixed with Mimosa or Goldenrod gives a neutral that stands in beautifully for Buff Titane—creating instant soft pastels without an extra pan.
Clarkia is the transparent pink I searched everywhere for. Most pinks go chalky or sit opaque on the page. Clarkia glows. It's made for wild bramble roses and spring blossoms.
Raw Umber & Sienne Brûlée are the earth anchors—one cool and richly textured for fallen leaves and seed pods; the other warm and glowing for stems and sun-warmed earth. Both feel especially at home among winter wildflowers. Sienne Brûlée is the quiet workhorse of the palette, mingling with nearly every color to create the softened greens and earthy browns found in nature.
And tucked inside the lid: a tiny pan of Silver Chalice, a mica pigment for the details that catch the light—lacy dragonfly wings, spider silk, the glazed shell of a beetle. A little magic for gossamer whispers and the armor of tiny wanderers.
About Nature Journaling Together
Nature Journaling Together is an online community built around the simple practice of noticing.
Each week, members gather live with their journals to paint side by side, pairing watercolor with words, poetry, and seasonal study. This summer's theme, Getting to Know Wildflowers, makes The Naturalist's Palette a fitting companion as participants explore blooms through every stage of their lives—from bud to blossom to seedhead—discovering that careful observation is every bit as rewarding as the finished painting.
