The First Anthophila Journal

The Fireside Companion marks the beginning of Anthophila’s journal series, created for the practice of observation and the preservation of collected knowledge. Intended for field notes, botanical studies, sketches, maps, and seasonal records, it serves as a durable repository for a life spent paying attention.

Constructed from full-grain English bridle leather, each piece retains the distinctive character of the hide from which it was cut. Subtle variations in grain, healed markings, and traces of the animal’s history remain visible, giving every cover an individual presence.

Traditionally hot-stuffed with waxes and oils, the leather is finished to a deep luster that will readily show handling. Fine scratches, pressure marks, and signs of wear are a natural part of the material and contribute to its evolving surface. Over years of use, the rich tan tone gradually deepens, developing a patina shaped entirely by its environment and owner.

Sized to accommodate a Japanese B5 Stalogy notebook, the design provides a lasting framework for an evolving archive. Notebook not included.

As the first volume within Anthophila’s Forms of Practice collection, The Fireside Companion reflects the values that guide the archive as a whole: careful stewardship of materials, functional beauty, and a commitment to objects that become more meaningful through time.

Each Fireside Companion is cut from full-grain leather and will display natural variations in grain, healed markings, and tonal shifts unique to the hide. The wax-rich finish readily acquires scratches and signs of handling, which contribute to the evolving surface and character of the piece over time.
